  1. When looking for treatment for her eye condition,
a woman was incorrectly given an erectile dysfunction cream to be used on her eyes, resulting
in chemical injury. The woman was prescribed and dispensed the erectile dysfunction cream, Vitaros, instead of
the eye ointment, VitA-POS, according to an article in the journal BMJ Case Reports.
The event was reported in by Dr. Magdalena Edington and colleagues from the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow, UK.
She immediately experienced discomfort and blurred vision, as well as redness and lid swelling on using the
cream. Prescribing errors are common, the authors write, and affect one in 20 prescriptions in England, a 2012
study said. Medications with similar names or packaging increase this risk.

The packaging of the Vitaros and VitA-POS creams vary, but their similar names make differentiating them difficult for first-time users,
the authors write. They add that it was unusual for no one,
between the pharmacists, GP and patient, to question the
prescription of an erectile dysfunction cream for a female patient, particularly one instructed to use it on her eyes.

The female patient visited a hospital for treatment of her
severe dry eyes and recurrent corneal erosions — a common condition caused by a scratch on the
cornea that does not fully heal, leading to a blister.
The blister can stick to the eyelid, during sleep for example, and once the eye is opened it may tear or pop, causing pain, blurry vision or sensitivity to light.

Vitaros promotes blood flow to other areas of the body,
explained Colin Vize, an ophthalmologist and chairman of the
quality and safety group of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, who was not involved in the
report. This causes blood vessels to become larger, which lead
to the conjunctival injection in this case, Vize added.
The report states she was treated with steroids, antibiotic eye drops and lubricants for a mild chemical injury on her eyes.
The chemical injury healed within a few days,
but the woman has continued to suffer from recurrent corneal erosions, for which she has
received follow up treatments. The mild chemical injury caused
by the cream would be similar to injuries reported from e-cigarette fluid,
nail glue and olbas oil, a decongestant, in the
eye, the authors said. Strokes-Lampard, who was not involved in the report, said
in an email to CNN that her organization can not comment on this
    individual case.

It’s worth talking to your healthcare provider
to determine if you could benefit from possible treatments of ED.
What are the most common causes of ED? When aroused, the brain sends signals to
nerve receptors in the body that increase blood flow to the
penis. This results in the pressure necessary to make it firm, or erect.
The penis will remain hard until either ejaculation occurs or arousal stops.
In many cases, circulation or blood flow problems are at fault for erectile problems.
Erectile problems can also be a sign of heart disease,
as a narrowing of the arteries can make it difficult for the penis to receive enough blood flow to
    become erect.

Diabetes is another potential culprit, as it can lead to damage to the nerves and blood vessels that facilitate erections.

Dr. Ramin told INSIDER. Sometimes, medications taken to treat
conditions other than ED can cause erectile problems.
Can stress or nerves cause ED? People with no circulatory problems or chronic medical conditions
can still experience erectile dysfunction. Sometimes, difficulty achieving
an erection can actually be linked to stress, fatigue, or nervousness about sexual performance.
Unfortunately, worrying about not being able
to get an erection can actually prevent you from achieving one.
If you’re finding that sexual performance fears are turning into
a self-fulfilling prophecy, it could be smart to talk to
a therapist or your healthcare provider about possible treatment options.

According to The Massachusetts Male Aging Study, ED is increasingly prevalent
    with age.

These numbers vary, however, depending on the definition of ED and the varying
degrees of the condition. Doctors know that most people with penises will experience some sort
of erectile problem at some point in their life. Though erectile
dysfunction can be frustrating at any age, it’s a condition that urologists and healthcare providers are
well-equipped to diagnose and treat. Is ED permanent or can it be cured?
It is possible to treat this condition in almost everyone.
In some cases, treating ED might involve working to heal the underlying
medical conditions contributing to erectile problems.
In other cases, working with a mental health professional can help to alleviate situational
erectile dysfunction caused by stress and anxiety.

Do herbal supplements or over-the-counter pills work for
    ED?

Some herbal supplement manufacturers claim to have products that can help people achieve firmer or longer-lasting
erections. The marketing of these supplements marketing isn’t always backed
up by science. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued multiple warnings against the use of nearly 30 brand names of commonly marketed
herbal pills. That’s because taking an herbal supplement that contains undeclared (or hidden)
    sildenafil or tadalafil could inadvertently
jeopardize your health. These medicines should only be used under a physician’s supervision as they
have the potential to interact dangerously with other prescription medications and shouldn’t be combined with
alcohol. There are, however, some studies that have shown that
Panax ginseng (red ginseng) may improve blood flow and, in turn, help treat ED.

Are there any non-drug options for treating ED?

Medications such as Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil)
can help most people achieve erections strong enough for
sexual activity. But these medications aren’t medically appropriate or desirable for everyone.

Vacuum devices that increase blood flow to the penis and
penile prosthesis surgery are also options for people who don’t want to take medication. The most important thing for anyone dealing with sexual health problems
is to talk to a qualified healthcare provider about treatment options.
Can diet or exercise help ED? The good news is that making a few lifestyle tweaks
might help ward off erectile dysfunction and even reverse some types of
ED. Adherence to a healthy diet and the adoption of an appropriate exercise routine can help
    sexual performance. Keeping physically fit
is a great idea even if you’re not dealing with erectile dysfunction. Keeping an eye on your diet and making
sure you’re staying active is a good way to help keep your sex life satisfying at all
    stages of life.

The researchers included more than 11,000 men with back pain in the study and examined their health
records to find out if men taking prescription painkillers were more likely to also receive
prescriptions for testosterone replacement or ED medications.
More than 19 percent of men who took high-dose opioids for at least four months also received ED prescriptions, while fewer than 7 percent of men who did not
take opioids received ED prescriptions. Richard A.
Deyo, MD, MPH, investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research
and Professor of Evidence-based Family Medicine at
Oregon Health as a next step, they are planning a larger
study that will include more health records and complete information on marital status, educational level and disposable income.
They are also pursuing a separate analysis of outcomes from erectile dysfunction drugs in men with
Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

June 23, 2005 — The U.S. Patients receiving all doses of sildenafil also achieved significant improvements in mean pulmonary arterial pressure and other measures of cardiac function. As the dosage strengths were similarly effective, the approved regimen was

a long-term, uncontrolled sildenafil extension study.
At one year, 94% of patients were still alive and demonstrated
stability in walk distance and functional class. The FDA notes that without a control group, these data must
be interpreted cautiously. Sildenafil was well tolerated; headache,
    dyspepsia, flushing, epistaxis, and insomnia
were the most commonly reported adverse events related to its
use. Sildenafil citrate (Viagra 25-, 50-, and
100-mg tablets, made by Pfizer, Inc.) was approved in March 1998 for the treatment
of erectile dysfunction. The Revatio pill is white and round and easily distinguished from the blue diamond-shaped Viagra tablet.
The FDA notes that although neither capecitabine nor combination therapy have been shown to prolong overall
survival, combination chemotherapy has demonstrated an improvement in disease-free survival compared with 5-fluorouracil plus leucovorin.

The rate of erectile dysfunction has increased from 5%

The number is expected to rise due to increase in geriatric population and rise in incidence of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular
diseases, and hypercholesterolemia affecting the normal erectile functioning.

Using a testosterone gel in addition to
Viagra doesn’t make the little blue pill work any better, according to a new study.
The report’s lead researcher said testosterone is typically prescribed to men who have both
low testosterone levels and symptoms such as little interest in sex or low
bone and muscle mass. But, “there’s a tremendous amount of clinical judgment" that goes into that,
said Dr. Matthew Spitzer, from the Boston University School of
Medicine. According to Spitzer, studies have
suggested that about one-quarter to one-third of men with
erectile dysfunction, or ED, also have low testosterone.
There’s a range in part because doctors and researchers don’t all agree on where the cutoff should
be for low levels of the male sex hormone. Spitzer and his colleagues found that a
starting course of sildenafil citrate, marketed as Viagra, helped improve sexual functioning
    for men with both conditions.

But adding testosterone on top of that didn’t provide any added
sexual benefits. The study included 140 men, aged 40
to 70. All were prescribed Viagra at 50 or 100 milligrams,
which they took as needed before sex. After three to seven weeks, half
of the men were randomly assigned to also use a
daily testosterone gel, Testim, and the other half used a drug-free placebo gel.
During the Viagra-only portion of the study, men’s erectile
function scores improved. On the sexual functioning scale, a score of 11-16
is considered “moderate" erectile dysfunction and 17-21
is “mild to moderate" dysfunction. The highest possible score, signaling no erectile problems, is a 30.
On average, men’s scores increased from 12.1 to 19.8
with Viagra. The men’s testosterone levels also rose on Viagra, according to the findings published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

For men who were then given the testosterone gel, testosterone levels increased significantly again. But neither those men nor the ones
who used the placebo gel had any further change
in their erectile function over the next three months.
There was also no difference between the two groups on measures of sexual desire, orgasm and frequency of intercourse.
The testosterone gel used in the study was provided by Auxilium Pharmaceuticals and the Viagra by Pfizer.
Spitzer told Reuters Health his team didn’t look at the effects of testosterone without Viagra, and it’s possible the gel would boost sexual functioning compared to no
treatment. In addition, testosterone may have other beneficial health effects, such as on strength and body composition,
he pointed out. Dr. Alvin Matsumoto, a geriatrician from the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Seattle
VA Puget Sound Health Care System who wasn’t involved in the new study.
Not all men see improvement with Viagra-type drugs, he said.

350 for a month’s supply, depending on the daily dose. Side effects of testosterone gel include headache, skin irritation and high blood pressure.

Treatment with Revatio (sildenafil) after surgery to the heart’s mitral valve significantly lowered pulmonary arterial pressure in patients with pre-operative significant pulmonary
hypertension, researchers from Israel report. The study, “Sildenafil for Pulmonary Hypertension in the Early Postoperative Period After Mitral Valve Surgery," was published
in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.
Left-sided heart disease is a common cause of pulmonary hypertension.
The mitral valve connects the heart’s left chambers, ensuring proper blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle.
Mitral valve surgery has been shown to be effective for pulmonary hypertension secondary to mitral valve disease.
But in many instances, pulmonary hypertension does not fully resolve after the surgery.

Therefore, in this Phase 4 study (NCT02378649),
researchers evaluated the efficacy and safety of Revatio (marketed by Pfizer) in alleviating pulmonary hypertension after mitral valve surgery.
    Revatio acts as a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor.
By blocking PDE-5, Revatio increases levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), inducing relaxation of
the blood vessels and improving blood flow.

Researchers identified 50 patients from Israel’s Sheba Medical
Center with severe pulmonary hypertension who needed mitral valve surgery.
The mean age of the participants was 68 years, and over half (52%) were men. Of the 50 patients,
88% (44) underwent mitral valve replacement, while 12% (6) had mitral valve repair surgery.

Patients were randomly assigned to two groups post-surgery: those who received 20 mg Revatio (25 patients) every eight hours, and
those in the placebo group (25 patients). Ask questions and share your knowledge of
Pulmonary Hypertension in our forums. Patients were on mechanical ventilation to
support breathing after the surgery, and were kept on it as
needed. Treatment was administered via a tube through the nose
into the stomach (nasogastric tube) while patients required mechanical ventilation, then orally for the rest of
the study. The first dose was given immediately after surgery, once the
patient was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU).

The remaining doses were administered every eight hours for a total
of 36 hours. Patients’ blood flow dynamics (hemodynamic
parameters) were monitored, namely blood pressure, oxygen levels, and the
amount of blood pumped by the left side of the heart in one minute (cardiac index).

Results showed that Revatio treatment significantly lowered the mean pulmonary pressure
from 32 mmHg at baseline to 26 mmHg after 36 hours of treatment.
No significant difference was noted in the placebo group before (34 mmHg) and after treatment
(35 mmHg). All other hemodynamic parameters did not have a marked change in either group, the team noted.
The median duration of mechanical ventilation support was lower for those in the
Revatio group (median 16 hours) compared to those on placebo (19 hours).
Patients treated with Revatio also had a shorter stay in the ICU (74
versus 91 hours), and were discharged from the hospital sooner (7 versus 11
days) compared to the placebo group.

Researchers hope that a clearer understanding of physiological
differences in these women will provide novel therapy targets as well as a method
to objectively assess therapies, said Diamond,
the study’s senior author. Viagra, developed in the 1990s as way to increase the heart rate of sick babies, was approved by the
Food and Drug Administration in 1998 to also treat male impotence,
a major cause of sexual dysfunction. While several more options for men have been developed
since, no FDA-approved options are available for women experiencing hypoactive sexual desire,
Diamond said. He notes that a possible critical flaw in developing and evaluating
therapies for women may be the inability to objectively measure
results, other than with a woman’s self-reporting of its impact on sexual activity.

Years ago, Diamond, a reproductive endocrinologist, became frustrated by the
inability to help these women. In fact, many women did not
bother discussing the issue with their physicians, possibly because it’s an awkward problem with
no clear solutions, he said. Their latest study links acquired hypoactive sexual
desire disorder to a distinct pattern of blood flow in the brain,
with significant activation of cortical structures involved in attention and reflection about emotion and mental state.
Researchers noted that paying more attention to response to sexual stimuli already is implicated in sexual dysfunction. They
also note activation of the anterior cingulate gyrus, an area involved in a broad range of emotions including homeostasis, pain, depression, and apathy.

Another key area was the amygdala, which has a central role
in processing emotion, learning, and memory. Women with normal sexual function showed significantly greater activation of areas such as the right thalamus – a sort of relay station for handling
sensory and motor input – that also plays a role in sexual arousal.
They also experienced activation of the parahippocampal gyrus, involved in making and recalling memories.

Interestingly, this area has been found to be more significantly activated in women with surgical menopause receiving hormone therapy.

Diamond notes that the official diagnosis of the sexual disorder requires distress regarding persistent disinterest in sex.
Study participants were heterosexual, in stable relationships
and had previously viewed sexually explicit images.
Those with sexual dysfunction had a mean age of 37 versus 29 in the control
group. Part of assessing blood flow patterns included also
measuring baseline responses to neutral videos.

VADODARA: Duplicate sildenafil citrate tablets used to treat
erectile dysfunction were seized from a pharmaceutical
unit near Godhra on Wednesday. The seizure was made after a firm investigating violation of intellectual property rights and
related issues filed a complaint with police. Gujarat Pharmaceuticals located on Vejalpur
Road near Godhra had come under the scanner of private investigators after they received information regarding tablets of the brand
Puregrey 100 being manufactured there. The investigators approached Panchmahal police following which the local crime branch
(LCB) raided the unit. LCH officers along with the private investigators swooped down upon the unit and recovered a carton full of tablets
of Puregrey 100 brand. The police seized 24,650 strips of eight tablets each from the site.

The strips were packed in small cartons of the brand. Each strip is sold at Rs224 and
the total stock seized from the unit was valued at Rs55,21,600.
A roll of the packaging for the tablet was also recovered from the unit.
Sources said a man Siraj Kesari was present at the unit.
He told the police that the unit was operated
by Sohail Foda. Kesari could not produce any documents supporting the
production of the tablet at the unit. The brand is actually
owned by a company KGN Pharmaceuticals Ltd. While
the tablets were duplicates of Puregrey 100 brand, it is not yet
clear if they were actually Sildenafil Citrate. A sample has been collected
by the police and will be sent to forensic sciences experts for analysis.

The advent of the medications sildenafil citrate (sold as
Viagra), tadalafil (sold as Cialis) and verdenafil hydrochloride
(sold as Levitra) has profoundly changed the treatment of
erectile dysfunction, according to background information in the article.
These medications are known as selective phodiesterase
type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors because they treat erectile dysfunction by interfering with
the action of the compound PDE5 on the blood vessels in the penis.
However, PDE5 inhibitors may also act on similar compounds in the retina, the part
of the eye that receives and transmits images.
Mild and transient blurred vision, blue-tinged vision and altered light perception have been reported by men taking these drugs, and some visual complications of long-term use have been suggested.

William H. Cordell, M.D., of Lilly Research Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company,
Indianapolis, and colleagues conducted a randomized placebo-controlled study to assess changes in the retina among men taking tadalafil or sildenafil.
A total of 244 healthy men, some with mild erectile dysfunction, age 30 to 65
were recruited. Of these, 85 were randomly assigned to take 5
milligrams of tadalafil, 77 to take 50 milligrams of sildenafil and 82 to take a
placebo daily for six months. The men underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations including
electroretinography (a test to measure the electrical
response of the light-sensitive rods and cones in the eye,
used to detect diseases of the retina) before, during and after treatment.

    A long-time London-based entrepreneur re-surfaces today with the launch of Numan, a
new kind of subscription business, with a rather unusual approach
to a very old problem. Sokratis Papafloratos (pictured) is one of the more “serial of serial" European entrepreneurs.
He also founded TrustedPlaces, the U.K.’s earliest and oldest local reviews site, which was Acquired by Yell
Group Plc; family-photo-sharing platform, Togethera (which shuttered) and Secret Escapes, one
of the U.K.’s first members-only travel companies.
Papafloratos is now turning his attention to a tricky subject
for men: erectile dysfunction (ED). The startup is backed by, it says, a group
of top-tier investors, led by Vostok New Ventures (who led the round for Voi
and are significant investors in Babylon Health).

“Health" is where we get some more clues. If you are familiar with businesses like Birch Box which sends women clothes on a subscription basis,
you’ll be familiar with Numan. This online
platform will aim to promote accessible medical
remedies for ED whilst also building a brand and story-telling around health issues affecting men’s
self-esteem and the lifestyle choices they make that
might affect their condition. While the early strategy will involve pharmaceuticals on subscription, the longer-term play,
says Papafloratos, will be the offer of direct-to-consumer medical products to help control
the symptoms of ED, along with online support from
    healthcare professionals.

It will also involve editorial content to help men and women understand the issue.
Eventually, this could be a sort of “Babylon Health for Men’s Health." But for
now, the MVP involves drugs and content. In case you are
unaware, erectile dysfunction is the inability
to get and maintain an erection, a condition that apparently affects two-thirds of men in the U.K.
It has been linked to mental health and lifestyle factors, such as anxiety,
stress, alcohol and relationships. That means
Numan will automatically have an audience, perhaps embarrassed
by their predicament, who probably would rather look online for solutions than go for therapy or medical
help. Treatment will be offered in the form of generic solutions,
such as Sildenafil and soon Tadalafil, and Viagra
Connect. All medication provided by Numan is licensed
    for sale in the U.K.

By selecting a treatment on the Numan homepage, consumers will be able to create an account and complete a short questionnaire covering symptoms and medical history.
Then a member of Numan’s qualified clinical team will
assess their suitability for the treatment.
Once approval is granted, a prescription is created and
the tablets are shipped and delivered within 48 hours.

Numan next plans to expand its health and grooming offering to include skin and hair treatment for men.
Papafloratos says: “We’re not just providing an online pharmacy though. We’re putting real emphasis on providing you with the knowledge you need to make the right decisions for you. So we’re releasing The Book of Erections — an in-depth guide on how your erections come about, or sometimes don’t and what you can do about it.
